How digital infrared night vision works

A digital view of the night
The GTMEDIA N4 uses a digital camera to capture light from a scene and display an electronic image on its built-in screen. In low light, available light contributes to the view. When the scene is too dark, the infrared illuminator provides additional light that the camera can detect. You look at the screen rather than directly through an optical telescope.
What the 850nm illuminator does
The built-in 850nm infrared illuminator lights the scene with near-infrared light. That light reflects from objects and returns to the camera. The N4 offers seven infrared intensity levels so you can adjust the illumination for your surroundings. More illumination does not guarantee a clearer image in every situation: nearby surfaces, reflections, weather and the subject can affect the result.
Using the N4 in low light
Start with the supplied instructions and a charged battery. Observe the scene on the display, then adjust the infrared level as needed. Use the device handheld or with its included adjustable head strap. Keep your surroundings in mind while viewing the screen; the device is intended for observation and does not replace normal situational awareness.
Frame and record what you see
The 5× digital zoom enlarges the displayed image. Digital zoom crops and enlarges the camera image rather than changing the optical magnification, so detail can decrease as you zoom. The N4 records 1080P Full HD video at 30 FPS and takes photos up to 10MP. The included 32GB TF card stores recordings; a card reader is included for accessing them.
Infrared night vision and thermal imaging
Digital infrared night vision forms an image from reflected light. A thermal camera detects infrared radiation associated with temperature and produces a different kind of image. The N4 is a digital infrared night vision device: it does not measure temperature or produce thermal images. Do not use it to make heat-detection decisions.
What affects the view?
Available light, infrared intensity, distance, weather and the subject all affect visibility and image clarity. Battery duration also varies with infrared settings and use. No fixed viewing distance or guaranteed performance in every environment is promised. Check the specifications and supplied instructions before choosing the N4 for a particular activity.
